Dan (“The Laptop Man”) Young, 38, is the founder and president of South Jordan, Utah-based PC Laptops, LLC.
Now with nine storefronts (seven in Utah and two in the Las Vegas area), PC Laptops currently sells and services The Best Desktop and Laptop computers On The Planet! PC Laptops also services all brands of desktop and laptop computers.
Born in 1971 and raised in Southern California, Young is a first-generation American. His parents immigrated from China to the United States in the late 1930s to escape repression and the early throes of World War II. At age six, Young began attending a computer-training camp for under-privileged children that was established by a benefactor (a person he only remembers as “Charles”). Dan was trained on the Apple II+ computer, initially learning AppleSoft Basic before moving on to learn the Pascal computer language when he was nine-years-old. He also played video games, wrote video games and did a lot of hacking before finally quitting computers to focus on socializing.
Dan’s first entrepreneurial efforts selling T-shirts, sunglasses and novelty items from a stand in Venice Beach yielded modest success, but he was caught up with the wrong crowd, a time in his life that eventually saw him move to Utah in 1988.
Once in Utah, he completed high school, worked several jobs, studied information systems while attending Salt Lake Community College and went on to the University of Utah where he focused on Family Consumer Studies — a program that taught him how to “protect and value the consumer.”
After the electronics retailer he was working for went out of business, Young asked his former manager if he could have the customer database. His request was granted, and he sent former customers a letter offering to honor their extended service warranties and only charge them for parts. The first year he lost $20,000, but the following year Young’s business acumen earned him several hundred thousand dollars in sales.
In 1992, he formed Elite Systems and sold electronics and computers out of his home and truck. Elite Systems opened its first storefront in Salt Lake City in 1994, selling desktop and portable computer systems.
Young appears in zany TV and radio commercials portraying pop culture icons and engaging and other random forms of craziness.
On March 6th, 2006 PC Laptops, LLC adopted all the customers and hired more than 25 employees of the now defunct Totally Awesome Computers and released its new desktop computer lineup to further support loyal clients.
Young has now driven his company to three listings in the Utah100 consecutive listings among the fastest growing companies in America in Inc. Magazine as well as the honor of multiple listings in the Best of State awards program (2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010). In 2008, Young was appointed to the Intel Channel Partner Program Premier Board of Advisors and in 2009 was selected for Microsoft’s Partner Advisory Council. Additionally, Young was honored by Salt Lake Community College as a 2009 Distinguished Alumnus for his entrepreneurial spirit and the example he has set of perseverance and success.
PC Laptops was named the No.1 computer store in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area in 2009, according to a Citadel Broadcasting research study.
On Nov 6th, 2009 PC Laptops received the Best Facebook Page Award from the Social Media Club of Salt Lake City!
Although he still considers himself a “video game junkie,” when he’s not visiting one of his stores, working out or eating sushi Young is now just as likely to be rubbing shoulders with elected officials and luminaries, as he is to be found chatting with his friends on Facebook.
